Starting from May 21, 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has begun a significant process. They are issuing invitations to apply (ITAs) to sponsors who have shown their interest and commitment by submitting ‘Interest to Sponsor’ forms via the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). This is a testament to the crucial role sponsors play in the PGP process.
Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada forwarded 35,700 requests over two weeks on May 21, expecting to accept 20,500 complete permanent residence (PR) applications. Invitations to Apply will be sent to the email offered by the sponsor when initially presenting their “Interest to Sponsor” form.

Who Is Qualified To Get An Invitation To The 2024 PGP
To be eligible for an invitation under the Parents and Grandparents Program in 2024, sponsorsneed to meet specific criteria. This clarity in the qualification process is designed to make sponsors feel informed and confident about their eligibility.They are required to:
- Have concluded an Interest to Sponsor form on Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada’s webpage in 2020 without getting an Invitation to Apply in 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023.
- Be a national of Canada, a permanent resident, or an enrolled foreigner under the Canadian Indian Act.
- Be above the age of 18.
- Must live in Canada (prospective candidates will be required to offer evidence of status during the Interest to Sponsor stage).
- Surpass the least applicable revenue level for this scheme (if married, the earnings of the two sponsors and partners can be attached) and offer evidence of revenue to IRCC.
- Sign an undertaking:
- To financially assist the sponsored for 20 years beginning when they become permanent residents), candidates in Quebec will be required to sign an undertaking for ten years.
- To reimburse any social support benefits reimbursed to the sponsored relatives for 20 years.
- If the sponsor lives in Quebec, an extra undertaking must be signed with the region.
Steps To Take After Getting An ITA From The PGP
When an Invitation to Apply is received, sponsors must answer with an application by the deadline summarized within the invitation message. Application charges are required to be as well reimbursed at this level (commonly beginning with $1,205)

What Can Sponsors Do If They Do Not Get An ITA In 2024
2024 marks the fourth year that the immigration unit will only consider Parents and Grandparents Program applicants from the 2020 acceptance.
Hence, the immigration system in Canada does not offer an option path to reunite Canadian nationals and permanent residents with their parents and grandparents, which is the super visa.
The Super Visa: If you don’t receive an ITA in 2024, you can consider the Super Visa. It’s a temporary resident stream that allows the parents and grandparents of Canadian nationals and permanent residents to visit and reside in Canada for a short term. In June 2022, the Super Visa was extended to allow family members to stay in Canada for five years without renewing their status. Super Visa holders can also apply for an extension of about two years, allowing a single stay of about seven years at a time.
While the super visa only grants temporary resident status to parents and grandparents, it is an accessible route to bring relatives to Canada. This is obtainable every year and without restrictions on the number of applications processed by IRCC.
