The Australian Department of Home Affairs has introduced plans to grant a 6-month renewal period for skilled worker visa holders within their country.
This was revealed in significant revisions to visa conditions 8107, 8607, and 8608, which are scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2024.
Some authorities added that these changes are aimed at addressing unfair labor practices and promoting the mobility of the labor market for temporary immigrants with the following visas:
- Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa (Subclass 457)
- Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (subclass 482)
- Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 494)
Visa Guide first reported that the latest updates pinpoint the extended flexibility for visa holders who ended employment with their sponsoring employer. With the new regulations, these individuals will have up to 180 days at a time, which equates to six months with a cumulative maximum of 365 days during the visa period, to secure a new sponsorship, apply for a new visa, and arrange their departure from the country.
During this period of grace, visa holders have permission to work for other employers, including occupations that have not yet been listed in their most recent nomination for sponsorship, enabling them to sustain themselves as they seek new sponsorship.
The Australian authorities stated that the changes apply to existing visa holders and those granted a visa on or before 1 July 2024. He stressed that any periods a visa holder refrained from working for their sponsor before 1 July 2024 will not be counted towards the new periods highlighted above.
