For years, the “Skilled Migrant” pathway has been the main route for Nigerians moving to New Zealand. But as of December 8, 2025, a new door has opened that does not strictly require a university degree.
New Zealand has launched two new seasonal visa pathways: the Global Workforce Seasonal Visa (GWSV) and the Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV).
These visas are designed to fill labor shortages in agriculture and horticulture. For Nigerian applicants, this is a rare opportunity to earn foreign currency and gain international experience without the high barrier of a Master’s degree or professional licensing.
However, the application process is strictly regulated to prevent scams. Here is exactly how the new system works and what you need to prepare before applying from Nigeria.
At a Glance: The Two New Visa Types
Unlike the old “Recognised Seasonal Employer” (RSE) scheme, these new visas operate under the Accredited Employer framework. This means your safety depends on getting hired by a vetted company.
| Feature | Global Workforce Seasonal Visa (GWSV) | Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) |
| Duration | Valid for 3 Years (must leave NZ for 3 months each year) | Valid for 7 Months (single season) |
| Best For | Experienced farm workers who want to return annually. | First-timers or short-term seasonal work. |
| Experience Required | 3 seasons of experience in the last 6 years. | 1 season of experience in the last 3 years. |
| Key Industries | Horticulture (Fruit picking), Viticulture (Wine), Skiing. | Meat Processing, Seafood, Forestry. |
| English Test? | Not Mandatory for the visa, but employers may require it. | Not Mandatory. |
Step 1: The “Job Token” (Don’t Skip This)
This is where many applicants get scammed. You cannot apply for this visa without a specific “Job Token” number.
You cannot just go to the Immigration New Zealand website and start a visa application. The process works in reverse:
- You must first find an Accredited Employer in New Zealand.
- You apply for a job directly with them.
- If they hire you, they initiate the visa process.
- They send you a unique link containing a Job Token.
- Only then can you complete your application.
⚠️ Warning: If an “agent” in Lagos asks you for money to process your visa but cannot show you a valid Job Token from a New Zealand employer, it is a scam.
Step 2: Check Your Eligibility
Before you start emailing employers, ensure you meet the criteria.
1. Work Experience (Strictly Verified)
New Zealand is strict about this. You cannot just claim you are a farmer; you need proof.
- Acceptable Proof: Payslips, tax records, or a formal reference letter from a registered agribusiness in Nigeria.
- GWSV Requirement: You must prove you have worked at least 3 distinct seasons (e.g., harvest periods) in the last 6 years.
2. Health & Medicals (The Lagos Requirement)
All Nigerian applicants must undergo a chest X-ray and a full medical examination.
- Crucial Detail: You cannot use your family doctor. You must use an approved “Panel Physician.”
- Where in Nigeria? As of late 2025, the primary approved location in Lagos is The Consultants Practice in Ikoyi.
- Cost Warning: Budget approximately ₦150,000 – ₦250,000 for these tests. You will need your passport and a referral letter (NZER number) which is generated after you start your application.
Step 3: How to Find an Accredited Employer
Do not spam random companies. You must target employers who are legally allowed to hire migrants.
- Use the Official Tool: Go to the Immigration New Zealand Accredited Employer Check.
- Filter by Industry: Search for sectors like “Horticulture,” “Viticulture,” or “Meat Processing.”
- Search for Vacancies: Once you have the company name, search for their “Careers” page on Google or LinkedIn. Look for roles like:
- Vineyard Operator
- Packhouse Worker
- Process Worker (Meat/Seafood)
Our Verdict: Is This a “Japa” Route?
It is important to be realistic.
The Good:
- Earning Potential: The minimum wage in New Zealand is over NZD $23/hour. Even after tax and living costs, the savings potential in Naira is significant.
- No English Test: Avoiding the cost and stress of IELTS is a huge benefit.
The “Catch”:
- No Direct Residency: Neither the GWSV nor the PSV leads directly to a Permanent Resident Visa. You are expected to leave New Zealand at the end of the season.
- Strict Return Rule: For the 3-year GWSV, you must spend at least 3 months outside New Zealand every year. If you overstay, you will be blacklisted.
Final Tip: Use this visa to build a financial foundation and international work history. A clean record on a New Zealand seasonal visa can make future applications to Canada, the UK, or Australia much stronger.
